I agree with you completely about the role of the top. I don't think this is the story to really delve into that (although a fic set in the AU might be) but I don't know if you've ever read my very long XF BDSM epic, "24/7". I do deal there to a certain extent with how the top feels and how having a demanding sub can be exhausting. In the society this John and Rodney come from, you have to assume there would be support structures for this kind of thing. Also AU Rodney does mention how hard it was for him to be a consistently good top because of his temperament.
On the other hand, this is fic and I suppose I want to deal with the hotness rather than the angst of these particular relationships. And this one in particular is very "out there" in terms of fantasy elements.
