I think re Rodney's staff that they aren't being jerks - they're just being polite and friendly - it's that Rodney is perceiving it through jealous eyes. That gets resolved in a very minor way later on.
As for the AU society - there are lots of options available to them - John and Rodney did opt for a more extreme form of marriage than I would guess most people opted for.
