Thank you :-). I really did feel John was loving in the punishment scene - within the boundaries of his role as top. He gave Rodney lots of hugs and was even regretful about the need for punishment and blamed himself. Then afterwards he gave Rodney S some space and then he held him and comforted him in a way that seems to work between them. I'm not sure what else he could have done really, save not give the punishment at all which wouldn't have been in keeping with the rules of their universe.
