I love that you're finding it so vivid and real! It IS definitely one of the darker ones - and I loved doing it :-). The use of the present tense might make it seem more vivid and real - I've been very drawn to the present tense lately and felt it worked particularly well here with the rollercoaster ride this story goes on.
