Exactly! He was so much more relaxed and jokey early on while also carrying the weight of that sadness too and it worked much better. I have no idea why he changed as Kelly and Shannon were still dead back then and I can't see that anything any worse has happened to him than that. I mean, Kate dying was sad, but it wasn't Kelly and Shannon levels of sad. Ah well. Who knows. Sigh.
