Exactly! She was adorable in S4 (and I love the actress, adored her in "Firefly"), but they keep stuffing her down our throats. She did her death-knell as far as I was concerned by not noticing Rodney had a problem because he was so nice. (In "The Shrine").
Reread and I'm still stumped, and I usually figure out mysteries within the first couple chapters, so I think you've got a good mystery going!
