I was thinking about the rules of not touching collared sub. Logic tells me, it's Earth custom. It can be the same for cultures from other planets, too, but probably not for all. I suspect it might cause a lot of "diplomatic" problems, even with friendly natives. And especially with tops as possessive as John is. Or do you assume it is the same everywhere?
