That's exactly it re John not inflicting any actual harm on Rodney. The pain was a testing measure in part. But also remember that Rodney identifies as submissive - he actually enjoys a certain amount of pleasure/pain, so John's stimulating him even if by doing that he's hurting him a little too. It's sexual pain and Rodney actually enjoys it :-)
