What I love about this prequel is what I am learning and having to redefine in my understanding of these two men.
I think I'm now more in tune with our Rodney from G&DS, when he remarked that General Sheppard was sort of scary. :) He is definitely one of those people who when they love, they love extremely well and it's for keeps, but this also brings about it's own level of intensity... I'm definitely seeing more signs of the General in John than has previously been apparent, It's not that I was suprised by how intense John could be, I wasn't, in fact I love that aspect of him, I think it was just a little overwhelming seeing that side of him with Rodney as he begins the process of guiding Rodney down the only path their relationship can go, it's also more than a little humbling to witness Rodney placing such implicit trust in John at this early stage of their relationship, you've just got to have a healthy respect for a man who can drop his guard so completely for his partner, no matter how worthy that partner is.
It's both exhilarating and terrifying to note just how passionate a top John is and how much he completely needs Rodney to submit to him, and whilst I have always known this on the periphery, this chapter really demonstrated just how important to him that both his and Rodney's roles are clearly defined. The nipple test, had me wincing quite a bit, that 's some pretty poweful writing on your part, I felt every moment right alongside poor Rodney.
I was interested to note that Rodney had done his fare share of playing at being a sub with previous partners, just as much as John had been doing as a top, and I loved that he didn't feel that need with John, that for John he was finding his true self as a sub, much as John is finding his true self as a top.
Overall, I loved this chapter, as much as it left me feeling a little lost in being able to fully grasp that level of total trust, I found myself hugging the knowledge of what I did learn close to my heart. I now see that scene back in G&DS when Rodney Sheppard was held captive by "house man" in a slightly different light, at the time I was thrilled by John's instincts and actions and I still am, but I have to admit that I saw it more as an act of possession more than anything else, the native had touched his Rodney and that was a big no, no... and whilst that is still part of it, I now see it more as what it probably always was, and that is John's total need to protect this man who means so much to him, the 'no touching my sub' rule of this universe now has a clearer definition in my mind... and I think this is where this chapter has led me... to an even better understanding of John's need for Rodney's complete and full submission, I think it's more about that innate basic instinct to protect and be better equipped to do so than anything else... although, I'm sure that Rodney's submission in the bedroom does wonders for John's toppy side too. ;)
I have to end this with a remark on Rodney's eating habits, can I say how much I thoroughly enjoy the way you write him when he eats... it's a pure delight. I did feel for John though when Rodney took the offered food with his fingers instead of biting down on it with his mouth, John has come a long way from those early days when he couldn't understand why anyone would want to share a plate. I'm looking forward to when they do share a plate though, if only as a symbol for how much Rodney must love John by accepting the "non-ploughing" method of eating his food. :)
I did enjoy this: "He was rewarded for that litany of insults by a sharp, stinging slap to his buttocks that made a delicious warmth spread throughout his entire body. "Ow! Also – not a disincentive to mouthing off," he said, and heard John snort with laughter behind him."
I do love the relationship between these two men and this playful little scene highlighted just how much at one they are with one another.
I have loved each and every chapter so far, you have a gift for reaching your readers emotions and giving them a nice little tug, but I have to say that this chapter has been a true testament to your superb writing skills. Absolutely well done!
