I think everyone was just so horrified by the thought it could happen to THEM and they knew there was nothing they could do to help Gibbs. *pets Gibbs*. I think it was his perception that they thought him tainted - but I can imagine there was a level of fear about soulless people ripping your heart out with their fingernails or stealing YOUR daemon - you can just imagine what the movies were like! LOL!
