Wow. I'm not leaving fb to every chapter, although I am enjoying it all hugely, but I wanted to comment on this one while it's still fresh in my mind.
The sex and punishment scene between AU John and Rodney was incredible. I haven't read anything quite like this before, because you managed to put so much detail into the thoughts, feelings and reactions of *both* protagonists.
General Sheppard is really quite scary in this state, but that's a realistic and dark part of his character that is often overlooked; maybe because I often read *him* in the sub or 'perfect hero' context; and I can totally see the appeal of it even while it makes me nervous. His acting like a wild animal, growling and marking and *claiming* Rodney at the end (and the light in his eyes when he thought of another way to do it) was just awesomely thrilling. The scene teetered on the edge of rape and masochism and done in almost any other way would have been quite squicky; but you could tell throughout that Rodney wants, needs and enjoys this treatment, and the pain is only superficial and momentary, the danger only present if he fails to submit. That gives it a charge which is visceral but not sordid, very exciting and titillating. It is also very good how you show that neither of them feels like punishing Rodney but they have to do it, because this is the nature of their relationship and their bond, and this releases Rodney as much as his previous domination releases John. I love the way that they both break down a little after emotions have been released, but neither of them gets over emotional or 'girly' about it, and Rodney in particular is not crying because of his punishment but because it's his own form of release, a trigger mechanism.
This chapter is also the one in which you explain the details of their relationship and traditional marriage, so that we realise there are shades of d/s in their world, but Rodney has willingly gone for the most submissive. It's the best description I've seen anywhere for the feelings a sub has for their top, and I thank you for that, because I already know the top's point of view and it's quite easy for me to write that and get into that character role myself, but the sub has always been something of a slight (albeit very sexy) mystery to me. With the way you have Rodney and John interacting, their positions are wholly believable and I can quite see why you don't look at John in a subby light--I'm not saying I've been converted (personally I've always seen him as a switch) but he would have very different reasons and feelings from Rodney and I don't think it could be taken to this level, nor do I feel Rodney would be the best person to be that dominant with John.
