You've taken a little extra time to stress the differences between their universe and ours and for me it's a reminder that what works in some societies doesn't work in others. The BDSM-based relationships work here precisely because their society's fundamental premises are based on it.
It would be compelling to see if the Colonel and Dr. McKay could find a relationship that's just as fulfilling as the one General and Dr. Sheppard have, but based on a completely different kind of personal dynamic. Could they create such a relationship based on our society's norms, not those of an AU that could never be attained in this reality? That answer may be "No" because the basic values seem to be orthogonal. I'm not trying to address the merits of one lifestyle over another, only that the comparison would be interesting.
