*Nods* If one alien species can invent a quantum transporter, there's no reason the Ancients couldn't have done so off their own bat! That's the best explanation yet--this one has nothing to do with the Stargate device so all quibbles are out :) I suppose that would also explain why Rodney didn't recognise it; although the Quantum Mirror was kept so super-top-secret that it's quite possible even McKay didn't get to work on it; I don't think they *allowed* anyone to research it, it was so dangerous, and then Hammond (the previous General) ordered it destroyed.
They are actually quite different shows, despite having so much in common. I used to love SG-1, but it started going gently downhill from season 4-5 and now I can't even bring myself to watch it, although I'm videoing the current series and will get around to it; at some point! I watched SGA with the hope that it would be an improvement on [then] s8 of SG-1, but without much hope; I was in fact rather resistant to the idea of anything exceeding my favourite fandom, but by the middle of season 1 I was hooked *G* I am 'into' SGA far more than I was ever into SG-1, which is something of a revelation, because that was the first show I went truly mad over. And the rest, as they say, is history!
One abiding idea I do have is that Jack O'Neill is secretly John's father; without knowing it himself. The ages are just right for him to have sired John at the start of his career, when he was young and carefree, and it might explain a lot about the fanon view of John's father--since the show still hasn't given us anything to go on! They have so much in common, right down to their smiles and messy hair, not to mention the ATA gene, love of flying, combat ability and alien-attracting charm *G* Yeah OK, I have a soft spot for rebellious flyboys ;)
