I think Rodney got a chance to eat while John was in the infirmary :-)

As for the timeline - it can't be that long on the show because Rodney doesn't seem to be suffering too much by not eating/drinking. It only seems to be a couple of hours to be honest but it's hard to tell. I thought a day was about right.
