After all Rodney was the FIRST human test subject for the gene therapy was developed by Carson(Hi, I'm going to help the Hoffens with their vaccine and then I'll go back to my lab on work on that Wraith retrovirus) Beckett. And Rodney was using an using an unknown device. For all they knew the shield was left behind because it was defective or worked intermittently. Instead in the episode everyone just assumed Rodney was afraid. That rubbed me the wrong way.

Now in your scenario, John assuming that Rodney is controlling the shield makes sense. You have shown enough of Rodney's insecurities to justify the assumption. And it adds to the development of all the characters. In other words, Bravo!
